Blackjack Histories and Controversies

Blackjack: the name alone has for years been synonymous with the card game. More than a catchy name, the game has a history shrouded in mystery and controversy.

The name "Blackjack" comes from a hand made up of the black ace of spades and the jack of spades. Much of the game's exact origin is unclear, but it could possibly be traced to an 18th century French card game known as "Vingt-et-un" (translated as "21"). It may also have roots in other European card games of the time, namely France's "French Ferme," "Chemin de Fer" ("Railroad"), and "Trente et Quarente," Spain's "One and Thirty," and Italy's "Baccarat" and "Seven-and-a-Half."

Blackjack was first introduced to the United States in the 19th century. Its popularity surged when the State of Nevada legalized gambling in 1931. The game has since become one of the most popular table card games in casinos worldwide, from Europe to the Americas.

As Blackjack became popular, many had attempted to develop strategies in beating the game. Mathematician Roger Baldwin formulated his "Optimum Strategy in Blackjack," published in 1956. Professor Edward Thorp followed it up in 1963, improving Baldwin's stratagem with the help of an IBM 704 computer in order to, as his book's title puts it, "Beat the Dealer." While the book helped make Blackjack all the rage, casino owners at the time were themselves raging, taking the book's title gravely seriously, and for a time attempted to change the rules of the game. This was only met with disapproval from their patrons, and the rules soon reverted back.

Another individual who made an impact in the world of Blackjack was Ken Uston. Known as "The Master of Blackjack" and "The Blackjack Hero," Uston is infamous for leading a group of players who used small stastistical analysis computers in their shoes to make a killing at the Blackjack tables, earning hundreds of thousands of dollars in less than a month. While Uston did this not strictly to cheat at gambling, but rather for informational purposes, casino owners were nonetheless distressed and once again tried to alter rules to counterattack anymore cheating attempts. But just as before, avid Blackjack players protested, and the old rules were once more reinstated.

Still as popular now more than ever, many players find Blackjack appealing on many levels; for its exotic storied roots; for the intellectual stimulation and challenge of its inherent scientific and mathematical complexities; or for the thrill of mastering a game that depends not just on chance, but on skill as well. And just as the game's history has also been shaped by its players, there is perhaps that faint hope that maybe you, too can be a Blackjack Hero in the making yourself.
